Working for COWI: Ivi Tatiana Arce Juliao

Ivi Tatiana Arce Juliao is from Barranquilla, Colombia, and is a civil engineer currently working on the Copenhagen Metro extension project. She came to Denmark three years ago to work after her husband found a job in Jutland. Following a move to Malmo, Sweden, Ivi started at COWI in April 2007.
COWI: How did you hear about your job with COWI?
Ivi: My husband and I had moved to Sweden after living in Jutland and someone told us about COWI. I kept looking at the vacancies on their website until I found a job that matched my background.

How is Denmark different from Colombia? The weather, of course. Also the people. In Colombia, people talk loudly and scream. Here, they are very quiet. You can start at 0830 with a hello and not talk to anyone again until they say goodbye.

What have you learned by working in Denmark?I think the Danes are friendly but very shy. I think they want to talk but they don't. I think COWI needs to encourage everyone to be more sociable if they want foreigners to integrate. This is a really good place to work, with exciting projects and new technology but, for example, the induction day for new staff is only in Danish.

Where else would you like to work?
Anywhere in Europe would be interesting.

What has surprised you about Denmark?
The honesty. Danish people are very honest. My husband left his camera in a hotel lobby here and it was still there 12 hours later when we came back for it.

What do you think of the food in Denmark?

I like it. It's very healthy. But I have never seen people eat so many potatoes and remain thin! It must be a different kind of potato than we have in Colombia. It must be mostly water or something.

What do you miss most about your home country?
Family, the weather.

Describe your day in two sentences.Work. Baby.

What would make your day easier? If more people talked with me.

What advice would you give to someone who's been offered a job in another country?
Not to try to find people from your home country. It is better if you try to integrate.

Do you prefer cheese or chocolate?
Chocolate, because it's sweet.
