Improving business practice, Ghana

COWI assists the major Ghanaian business associations in developing a national code of business conduct. It is the first time that a national business code is being implemented anywhere in the world.

The project will help to improve the credibility of the private sector companies in Ghana, and help create economic growth and employment.

Development of a business code

A key part of the assignment has been development of a code that is internationally relevant, acceptable and yet challenging to the companies in Ghana, and feasible to implement. The code is based on the United Nations Global Compact and covers human and labour rights, discrimination, environmental responsibility, and anti-corruption.

Communication and training

In October 2006, the Ghana Business Code was launched with intensive public relations activities to create brand value, in order to make the companies sign up for the code. Now this is being followed by further training and awareness-raising activities at company level.

For the first two years the enforcement is based on self-reporting by the companies on their compliance with the code, but the project aims to create a system for certification with procedures and guidelines for the three business associations.
