Seeb and Salalah airports, Oman

In a joint venture with Larsen Architects, COWI has been appointed as the main consultant for planning, design and construction supervision of two new international airports in Oman. This constitutes the biggest single international contract in the history of the company.

The larger of the two airports, Seeb, will serve the capital Muscat and the more populous northern Oman region. On completion of stage 1, the airport will have a capacity of 12 million passengers a year. The second and smaller airport, Salalah, to be built in southern Oman, will initially have a capacity of two million passengers a year. The airports are planned to be completed by the end of 2010.

The consultancy will include all phases of the project from planning, conceptual and detailed design to construction supervision.

Project complexity

The assignment includes the construction of runways and taxiways, terminal complex, control tower and other associated buildings and facilities including access roads. The goal is to provide two pre-eminent modern airports capable of handling the latest aircraft including the Airbus 380, the world's largest passenger aircraft. In recent years Oman has been developing its tourist industry as an alternative to the country's oil and gas riches, and the airports are seen as intrinsic elements supporting the country's burgeoning tourist industry.
