A key focus area in addressing the environmental problems of the world, specifically in relation to air pollution, is the environmental and technical performance of the power and heating plants. Improved energy efficiency is directly linked to improved environmental and financial performance.Further investments in environmental upgrading and efficiency improvements are major objects for the international emission trading schemes and systems, such as the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) and the Kyoto Protocol.COWI provide consultancy services within all project phases of the project cycle i.e. feasibility study, conceptual design, tendering and supervision.
Internationally, coal is and will continue to be a primary energy resource for power and heating plants.COWI is involved in all aspects of environmental upgrading of thermal power plants (TPPs), including air pollution, ash and slag handling and depositing, water and wastewater utilisation and treatment.
Energy efficiency improvements cover a wide range of possible measures from pre-treatment of coal over the energy conversion efficiency in boilers, turbines and auxiliary equipment to utilisation of waste heat for either heat or cooling purposes.
The international emission trading is becoming more and more important along with the implementation of the various international agreements within this field as for example the EU emission trading scheme and the Kyoto protocol.
