New large hospital project in Aarhus

The county of Aarhus wants to create the first hospital in Europe with patient-focused care, in which the staff works in multidisciplinary teams attached to each department and who are responsible for the patients during the entire course of their hospitalisation.
Several staff groups will be involved with multi-disciplinary tasks and will attend to a broad field of activity.

This project requires rebuilding and extension of the hospital Aarhus Amtssygehus. COWI will provide consultancy services on all engineering disciplines.

"The project is a strengthening of a business area which we expect much from in the future," says Bjarne Nielsen, head of department at COWI.

From spring 2003 until 2008 the hospital will be rebuilt and extended by 30.000m² in addition to a basement for the technical installations and a subterranean car park.

The construction will be executed in three phases and will include a new main entrance, five clinical departments, an auditorium and educational facilities, patient hotel, etc.

The project was won together with the architectural firms CUBO and Fich & Bengaard.
