Secure fuel supply for Greenland
New system will ensure Greenland's fuel supply all year round.
Meticulous planning and efficient stores control are essential if the people and industries of Greenland are to have fuel all year round. COWI has now been hired to make sure they do.
Kalaalit Niuerfiiat, KNI (former Grønlands Handel), is responsible for all import and distribution of fuel in Greenland, some 240 million litres a year. It is transported by tankers that supply more than 120 storage depots spread around towns, settlements, power stations, commercial customers and airports.
"Greenland's planning is currently a manual process that requires considerable experience and knowledge of the special conditions of the country, with its tides of up to four metres and icing up of its harbours for up to three months a year. All this is entered into our computer system LOGIO, which the oil business uses for planning routes and storage control. So we combine our experience in road transport with our knowledge about Greenland," says COWI Project Manager Bo Slott of Informatics and Management.
COWI's clients in the oil sector have recommended KNI to invest in the system as it cuts transport costs and storage volume to such a degree that the DKK 1.5 million outlay is recouped within a year.
KNI also trades in foodstuffs and beverages and plans are under way for the system to be expanded to control KNI's distribution of beverages in Greenland.
