New report: Transport in the Baltic Sea Region

A new report from the Baltic Development Forum summarises five themes which constitute the backbone of the recommendations on the need for intelligent transport and infrastructure in the region.
At the annual Baltic Development Forum summit 16-18 October in Stockholm, COWI presented five analytical themes which were discussed in depth in work-shops and now constitute the recommendations from the Baltic Development Forum Round Table.

The five themes are:

  • Visions for regional transport infrastructure and the role of public private partnerships
  • Motorways of the Baltic Sea
  • Need, value and importance of promotion of demand driven air transport networks
  • Need, value and importance of promotion of the "Baltic Sea Region of Modern Freight Intermodality"
  • Development of a fast track harmonisation pilot programme

The presentation took place on the session: "Intelligent Transport and Infrastructure - an Innovative key to Future Growth and Prosperity" and was concluded with the launch of a report with the same name, edited by COWI.

The Baltic Development Forum

COWI has been a leading partner in The Baltic Development Forum Round Table, established in 2002, and formed by business executives from a large number of private companies - industries, shippers and operators - and organisations in the Baltic Sea Region. More than 70 business leaders have participated in the work in a three year period.

The mandate is to discuss the private sector priorities for development of the transport sector and infrastructure in the Baltic Sea Region, and during the years 2003-2005 two rounds of altogether seven inspiring and fruitful round table meetings have been held at various locations around the Baltic Sea.

The result of the first round was presented at the Baltic Development Forum Summit in Riga in October 2003 with the report "Challenges for the transport infrastructure of the Baltic Sea Region", which was also edited by COWI.

Development in the Baltic Sea Region
The Baltic Development Forum summit offers a unique platform for debating key issues of relevance for approximately 500 decision makers and leading experts in the Baltic Sea region and globally. It gives an opportunity to meet with regional as well as extra regional partners from politics, business, academia and media. The overall theme this year was: "The Baltic Sea Region as a Role Model - Achieving Global Excellence in Competitiveness and Innovation by 2010".

The focus is on how to stimulate growth and development in the region in a world of increased globalisation and increased competition from emerging economies in other parts of the world. A topic which is extremely relevant also for the de-velopment of the business in the COWI Group.
