Fair wind for COWI on the roads

Contracts for three new large road projects in China, Pakistan and Tanzania marked the end of the year 2004, which turned out to be a very good year for COWI's road consultants
All over the world quite a few kilometres of roads will be built, renovated or improved with the help of COWI during the coming years. Three new large contracts are just the latest in a long series of road projects won in 2004.

"The past two years have been very successful years for us when speaking of roads. We won eight out of the nine major projects that were important for us to win. The two projects in China and Pakistan mean that we can continue expanding the expertise our subsidiary Kampsax has built in the transport sector in these two countries since the 1980's," says Lars H. Møller, responsible for the African market in COWI's road division.

Pakistan

COWI is assisting with design, tendering and supervision in connection with the reconstruction and improvement of 164 km of provincial highways and 1200 km of rural access roads in a large project in Pakistan's Sindh Province.

The project forms part of a major road sector reform program, financed by the Asian Development Bank, ADB.

China

ADB also finances a major expressway project between Baoshan and Longling in China's poor Yunnan Province. Among other things, COWI will assist with project management, design and construction of tunnels and bridges, and improvement of traffic safety.

Tanzania

In Tanzania, COWI continues its almost 40 years of presence in the country with a contract for detailed design, tendering assistance and supervision for the improvement of the Chalinze-Segera-Tanga Road. The project is financed by Danida.

COWI has worked on this road previously and carried out a pavement condition study in 2003 in order to formulate the necessary future improvements.

"Tanzania is an important market for us. With this project, we maintain our edge in the Danida projects in the country," says Lars H. Møller.
