New link planned for "City of Bridges"

The historic bridges spanning Constantine's valleys will be joined by a contemporary cable-stayed bridge.

COWI signed a contract with the Brazilian contractor Andrade Gutierrez in June 2009 for the detailed design of the Constantine Viaduct project in the city of Constantine, Algeria.

Constantine, the third largest city in Algeria, is known as the "City of Bridges" due to the number of historic bridges spanning the deep ravine around the city.

The existing bridges include a suspension bridge and an ancient Roman viaduct. The new bridge will be the first cable-stayed bridge in Constantine.

The project comprises a 750 metre-long main bridge, including a cable-stayed bridge carrying four traffic lanes. The cable-stayed bridge will have central concrete pylons with a height of 130 metres, a central cable plane and a concrete box girder.

The bridge will cross the River Rhummel, and the project includes a total road network of approximately 6 kilometres. A highway will link the main parts of Constantine and the interchanges in connection to the cable-stayed bridge.

In 2008, COWI carried out the successful tender design for the Design-Build tender. COWI was supported by the bridge architects Dissing+ Weitling for the tender design of the bridge.

The detailed design will be carried out in a 12- month period, and the construction of the bridge is expected to be completed in 2012.
