The new hospital will be located in Hjelset/Opdøl.

COWI has signed a contract with the Central Norway health authorities on the planning of a new hospital and a district medical centre in the region of Nordmøre and Romsdal. The project kicks off straight away.

The new hospital will meet the long-term demand for specialist services and serve as the region's emergency care hospital. With a floor area of some 80,000 m², the hospital will replace the existing hospitals in the towns of Kristiansund and Molde. The total project sum is in the range of NOK 5.5-5.8 billion.

COWI and Nordic – an experienced team

COWI acts as engineering consultant on the project and Nordic Office of Architecture as architects. Nordic and COWI have extensive experience from building hospitals across Scandinavia, and they have worked together on several major hospital projects in Norway. Among these are the construction of St Olav's Hospital in Trondheim, the hospital in Vestfold, a new hospital in Stavanger, and the idea phase for Oslo University Hospital.

"The employees of COWI Norway were thrilled to hear we landed the project, and we look forwarding to working with the client, the architect and the users," says Kirsti Engebretsen Larssen, Senior Vice President of Buildings, COWI Norway.

In her opinion, hospital planning is incredibly complex:

"Because a hospital impacts the local community significantly, such a project inevitably sparks a lot of interest. It's also key to ensuring that the hospital can develop to meet future requirements and needs," she explains.

Work starts now

Nordic and COWI start work this August. The next important project milestone is December 2015, when the main programme for equipment, the overall technical programme, masterplan and preliminary studies are to be completed.

The actual construction of the new hospital will commence in 2018 and the hospital is scheduled for completion in 2021.

More than 450 COWI employees work on hospitals

Today, more than 450 COWI employees across Scandinavia are involved in the planning and design of hospitals.

Charlotte Nørbak, Senior Project Director in hospital buildings in COWI Denmark, says:

"This hospital project in Nordmøre and Romsdal once again demonstrates that COWI is at the forefront when it comes to winning large-scale hospital projects in Scandinavia. We gain lots of knowhow from such projects, which we can apply to other hospital projects anywhere in the world."

In Denmark, COWI is currently involved in the design of the new Hospital of Southern Jutland in Aabenraa and acting as client consultant on the New North Zealand Hospital in Hillerød.
