Two COWI projects receive top honours at MIPIM

Two COWI projects came away winners from the annual MIPIM international property market expo in Cannes this week. Krøyers Plads, on the Copenhagen waterfront, received the Best Housing Development award, while the New North Zealand Hospital, in suburban Copenhagen, won in the category Best Futura Mega Project.

Krøyers Plads

COWI collaborated with Vilhlem Lauritzen Arkitekter, COBE Arkitekter and NCC Property Development to design the Krøyers Plads project. The buildings are inspired by the surrounding historic warehouses.

When completed, the three buildings, encompassing a total of 20,000 square metres, will include 130 flats, all with views of Copenhagen’s colourful Nyhavn harbour and the Royal Theatre’s new playhouse. The development also includes shops, cafés and other retail spaces on the ground floor.

“We are proud that we were able design an extraordinary property on one of the city’s few undeveloped plots of land. The project’s unique design has been a challenge for the engineers. Elements such as slanted facades and folded roof surfaces resulted in a complicated geometry that required us to come up with new approaches,” says Kasper Kristensen, who, as a COWI’s construction specialist, is deeply  familiar with the project’s design challenges.

New Hospital North Zealand

New Hospital North Zealand, in the town of Hillerød, won in the Best Futura Mega Project category. The award is given to developments over 100,000 square metres that incorporate architecture, new technology and environmental considerations in an innovative way, and which can serve as a model for future developments.

COWI’s consultancy on the project has included assisting with planning and completion of the two-phase design tender.

“This is an impressive project that fully deserves this prestigious award. The hospital has high ambitions for both design and for ensuring that the needs of patients and their families are taken into account. We are enthused about being able to contribute to the project’s success,” says Charlotte Nørbak, Vice President for Buildings Management.
