establish the world’s best hospital for children, adolescents and their
families. This is the vision of the new Children's Hospital Copenhagen Copenhagen. COWI is the client consultant.
Now, the winning design has been announced.
The new Children's Hospital Copenhagen will have a distinctive characteristic; a building shaped as two hands, gathering all children, adolescents and women in labour under one roof while taking care of the whole family.
The architecture firm 3XN A/S has developed the winning design, ‘Playfully Logical’, and the ambitions are high for the new hospital: To revolutionize the experience before, during and after treatment. The new building creates a framework that lets families be together as a family and helps them maintain a normal everyday life.
At Children's Hospital Copenhagen, the specialists will come to the children, the adolescents, the women in labour and the families – not the other way around. The concept of play will be integrated in all treatment and in the entire process.
“Children will not stop playing because they become ill, and at Children's Hospital Copenhagen we can and will support this fact. I like the symbolism of the hands, because what we want to do is provide a safe pair of hands to people who are facing a difficult life time. At Children's Hospital Copenhagen, we will help families and patients maintain their everyday life to the extent possible while they are being treated and that is of great importance,” says chairwoman of the regional council, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen.
The Capital Region of Denmark has donated DKK 1.4 billion to the project. Ole Kirk’s Foundation has donated DKK 0.6 billion.
