The Eastern Link project marks the first step towards a new generation of railways in Sweden. The new high-speed railway is part of a future connection between Stockholm and Gothenburg/Malmö. Together with Systra, COWI has won the third stage of the project, with a contract sum in the range of SEK 100-300 million.

The Eastern Link is a planned high-speed railway, aiming to improve the infrastructure in Eastern Sweden. Reducing travel time between the region's larger cities, the link will enable passengers to commute faster between jobs, educational institutions, home and recreational activities. The link will also connect the region to the rest of Europe.

The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has appointed COWI and Systra as technical consultant on the third stage of the project. COWI is charged with developing the plan for the railway as well as the basic design for 75 out of a total of 150 kilometres of railway.

"We are very proud to have won this project as the competition was fierce. This prestigious project will further strengthen our position as a strong player in high-speed rails," says Christer Niland, Vice President, Transportation, COWI Sweden.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2017 and the first trains will commence operation in 2028.
