Leading consulting group with a 360° approach
Danida's investments and COWI's consultancy in Tanzania's infrastructure significantly improves travel and commerce in the East African country. That is the conclusion of a new book written on the basis of loads of interviews, reports and sight visits conducted by two former Danida employees.
Since the 1970s, the joint efforts of Danida and COWI have helped Tanzania develop its infrastructure in particular on roads and harbours.
Especially, the TANZAM Highway from Dar es Salaam over Iringa to Mafinga in the south west to Zambia was improved for the benefit of travellers and commerce.
In the book "Moving ahead together. A Story about Tanzania-Denmark Cooperation to improve the Tanzania Transport Sector" regional manager for TANROADS in the Iringa Region in Central Tanzania states about the TANZAM project:
"One of the best consultancy projects in Tanzania, a textbook example of how you build a highway."
The 220 km part of the TANZAM Highway was designed and supervised by COWI and constructed by Aarsleff/BAM.
According to one of the authors, the long-lasting and trusting relations between the parties not least drive the good results on the infrastructure projects.
Thomas Mejer, Vice president for Highways and Airports in COWI, agrees:
"Our nearly 50 years of local presence and collaboration with the local authorities combined with our international competencies are a perfect starting point for the dialogue needed to deliver the infrastructure solutions, that solve the challenges of the countries. It is a big pleasure to experience how our work creates coherence and great value not only for the users but for the whole country."
At the moment, COWI is working on infrastructure projects in several African countries. The list includes:
