COWI A/S in association with COWI Tanzania Ltd. and Apex Engineering Ltd. carried out consultancy services for upgrading of the Tabora - Koga - Mpanda road in Tanzania.

The road is located in Tabora and Rukwa regions in the western part of Tanzania and passes mostly through flat and rolling terrain including low lying areas with expansive subgrade soils. The road is classified as an un-paved earth/gravel trunk road being currently in fair/poor condition and becoming semi impassable during the rainy seasons.

The traffic on the road section is suppressed due to poor condition of the road but is expected to be generated after the upgrading to bitumen standard. The road section provides catalyst in reducing poverty and increase economic growth in the area.

The objective of the assignment was to determine the technical and economic feasibility of upgrading the existing approximately 355 km long road section to bitumen standard taking into account, environmental and social aspects.

The project also included rehabilitation/replacement of 12 existing bridges, drifts and box culverts. Based on the results of the feasibility study, the detailed engineering design and preparation of prequalification and tender documents for International or National Competitive Bidding were carried out.
