Detailed design for Wikinger offshore wind farm, Germany

​The joint venture of COWI A/Sand IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, led by COWI, has been involved in this project for some years.

​The Wikinger project is located in the Baltic Sea within the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) about 34 km northeast of the island of Rügen.

The project covers an area of approximately 34 km². 70 5MW Areva turbines and one 560 MVA 220 kV/33 kV offshore substation will be installed.

The joint venture of COWI A/Sand IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, led by COWI, has been involved in this project for some years, and has now been entrusted with the detailed design of the foundations and the basic design of the sub-station.

COWI was Iberdrola’s representative in the preliminary geophysical and geotechnical investigations for the 1st BSH release, and is finishing the detailed geotechnical investigations for the 2nd BSH release. Furthermore, COWI has carried out the feasibility study of the turbine foundation types, investigating concepts for monopiles, gravity based foundations and jacket foundations. Based on our preliminary foundation design we are now in the basic design phase of the jacket foundations for the application for the 2nd BSH release.

For the offshore substation, we cover all mechanical and electrical services as well as structural design of topside and jackets. We have just presented equipment layout and topside and jacket design for Iberdrola and the first HAZID meeting has been scheduled.
