COWI A/S in association with Aviaplan of Norway and STUP of India provided consulting services for preparing the master plan, engineering/architectural design and tender documents for the construction of the new Hyderabad International Airport.

The new greenfield airport is situated near the village of Shamshabad, approximately 20 km southwest from the centre of Hyderabad.

Two phases
The project was implemented in two phases - phase I the master planning, design and tendering and phase II the construction supervision.

The vision of the project was to build an airport of international standard with emphasis on:

  • High level of service for passengers
  • Modern architecture
  • Efficient operation and maintenance
  • Environmental friendliness

5 million passengersIn the opening year the new Hyderabad airport was forecasted to handle approximately 5 million passengers. Minor expansions will be required to increase the annual capacity to 7 million passengers, while the ultimate passenger capacity is expected to be 40 million passengers per year.
