Arena Funen - new sports arena, Denmark

The city of Odense wants to attract more large scale cultural and sports events and has build a new sports arena with a capacity for 4,000 spectators.

Arena Funen, the provisional name of the arena, has been built in connection with Odense Congress Centre and with a floor space of 8,500 m2 it is big enough to house high profile events like the world cup in handball.

The arena is an important part of Odense Municipality overall cultural strategy. Therefore the arena is also used for concerts, fairs and other large scale shows. The goal is to attract very different events which each in their own right can help profile Odense as a city of sports and culture.

On a tight schedule

COWI was consultant to MT Højgaard, the general contractor who won the project competition together with C & W Architects and Jesper Thyge Brøgger. COWI has been responsible for all engineering disciplines including acoustics and fire safety.

The new arena was already booked for the first events before the shell structure was finished in February 2007.
