The Blue Planet - New Aquarium

Denmark's Aquarium is moving to new buildings on the outskirts of Copenhagen. At the same time the aquarium is changing its name to the Blue Planet. COWI will act as client consultant in collaboration with PLH Architects.

The ambition is to create a world-class aquarium - an architectural gem with a unique location on the waterfront close to Copenhagen Airport. The Blue Planet will be a landmark that greets travellers arriving to the Danish capital by air or crossing the Oresund Bridge from Sweden.

Exotic underwater life

In the new aquarium visitors can experience the animals and plants of the sea and it's surroundings using all senses.

The exhibitions will present exotic themes, such as a Faroese rocky coast aquarium with spindrift, North Atlantic fish and flying sea birds. Or a giant rain forest where visitors walk through tunnels and on paths and bridges while experiencing aquatic fauna, flora and waterfalls at close range.

Science and culture

The Blue Planet will bridge science, culture and research by offering visitors fascinating experiences, while at the same time carrying out Denmark's Aquarium's present work with teaching, research and communication.

New and larger building

With its 10,000 m2, the Blue Planet will be the largest and most modern aquarium in Northern Europe with extensive outdoor areas and advanced research facilities.

The new building will have optimal road and parking facilities, as well as busses, metro, trains and a public footpath right to the door.

International architect competition

To fulfil the architectural ambitions, the designing architects and engineers will be found through an internal competition.

When the right design has been found, the Blue Planet can open to the public - according to the plan in 2012.
