Artillerivej Syd - new urban development in the Copenhagen harbour

As quickly as industries leave the environs of Copenhagen Harbour, new town areas shoot up. At a central quay in Copenhagen a visionary urban area is being developed with an artificial creek and a sandy beach.

This very central area in Copenhagen has for a long time been dominated by derelict and deserted industrial buildings. The area is bounded by recreational areas on one side and the habour basin on the other and is situated on the small island Amager.

An attractive urban area

The intention is to build approximately 190,000 m2 of mixed housing and commerce. The district plan proposes the establishment of a varying town district combining high and dense developments with low, more open and organic buildings. The plan opens up for the possibility of high-rise buildings up to a height of 45 m.

Great emphasis is placed on the proximity of the district to the nearby recreational areas of the harbour and the common, and as an additional feature the overall plan includes the establishment of an artificial creek. The creek makes possible the establishment of a sandy beach and a bathing jetty which will become a major attraction.

A strong team behind Quay South

The area named Artillerivej Syd is developed by NCC Property Development, Kay Wilhelmsen, Bryggen Waterfront, and Walls.

The landowners have engaged a group of consultants to manage the process and ensure that the intentions in the overall development plan are realized. This group consists of Schønherr Landscape, Jord & Miljø, LE 34 and COWI.

COWI have the overall responsibility for project coordination and also provide technical advisory services within the fields of traffic planning, infrastrucure and public utilities.

Advanced Process Consultancy

COWI's project manager, Charlotte Nørbak, says about COWI's engagement in Quay South:

"It has been a most stimulating challenge to get four landowners to play together on the same pitch according to the same rules. Not least because The City of Copenhagen also has a firm opinion as to how the overall development plan should be interpreted."

One of COWI's primary tasks has been to provide the prerequisites for a successful development of the area.
