Sluseholmen - residential development in the Copenhagen harbour

Inspired by Dutch canal houses Sluseholmen is part of a plan to redevelop Copenhagen's industrial harbour into an attractive neighbourhood with recreational, commercial and residential buildings.
Sluseholmen consists of eight artificial islands where 1,000 new dwellings modelled on Dutch canal and quay houses are being built. The development will consist of terraced houses as well as apartment buildings up to seven storeys high fitted with individual colour patterns to ensure variation.

Variation is the key to success
Having found the inspiration in similar residential developments in Holland, it was decided to appoint a Dutch architect to design the overall master plan for the whole area. Danish architects Arkitema and a further twenty Danish facade architects are responsible for ensuring variation in architecture, utilizing for example different building materials and individual window types, sizes and placements.

Part of the plan is also making sure that residents come from all walks of life, and therefore Sluseholmen consists of privately owned as well as co-operative and rental housing.
