Lantmännen Mills - new flour mill in Vejle, Denmark

Lantmännen Mills is planning to concentrate their activities in Denmark on the harbour in Vejle. As a result Lantmännen has expanded their existing production plant to a capacity of 250,000 tons every year.

The new plant has been built in connection with the existing. With silos and machine buildings up to 60 meters high it is visible throughout the harbour. COWI has been consultant engineer on the whole project which is an investment of about 400 million DKK.

The objective has been to create state-of-the-art production facilities which live up to increasing demands for quality, hygiene, traceability and environmental protection in the food industry.

A multidisciplinary project

COWI has been responsible for tender documents on the process equipment and prepared the preliminary design for all other contract works. Until the completion of the mill in 2008, COWI was also responsible for detailed design on buildings and installations and building management and supervision in the construction phase. In the busy periods during the design process, 15 - 20 engineers were working on the project full time.

The building of Lantmännen's new mill has been a multidisciplinary project involving building, industry and environmental specialists from COWI. Together they have provided consultancy services within:

  • Project management
  • Building structures
  • Process- and IT-automation
  • M&E installations
  • Environmental engineering and management
  • Noise and acoustics
  • Subsurface investigations

Efficiency and knowledge sharing

Co-operating closely with the client is an essential part of COWI's multidisciplinary consultancy and therefore Lantmännen's own project team temporarily moved into COWI's offices in Vejle. The whole project group worked side by side and in this way the project has benefitted in terms of efficiency and knowledge sharing.
