Joint management of protected areas, Thailand 

COWI works with promoting participatory approaches to protected area management. We work with involvement of key stakeholders, including civil society.
Joint management of protected areas aims at promoting participatory approaches to protected area management in Thailand, securing both biodiversity conservation and improved livelihood of local communities.

Key problems addressed

The project addresses key problems such as the continued loss of biodiversity, degradation of the ecosystem functions, loss of livelihood opportunities for the rural poor and lack of democratic involvement of a broad range of stakeholders in the protected area management.

Operational management

The project aims at developing operational protected area management including ecosystem approaches and joint management in a range of protected areas. Support is provided at national and protected area level.

Participation of key stakeholders

project supports the implementation of the basic principles of people's participation and decentralisation as stressed in the Constitution of Thailand and policies on decentralisation. It involves key stakeholders including protected areas authorities, local communities, local authorities, civil society organisations and the private sector. Support is provided to both government agencies and Non Governemental Organisations.
