Digital mapping for Ordnance Survey Ireland

Our task was to map over 12,000 sq.km of rural Ireland onto 1,000 map sheets in 1:5000 scale. The maps became part of Ireland’s national mapping database, and are expected to be revised every three years.
The 1:5000 map sheet plotting results in fully 3D maps in a topological link and node structured data model. The maps are used as base data; and support derivative products such as atlases, guides, and other products.

Digital Mapping

Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) supplied the scanned images and aerial triangulation.
The photogrammetric data capture was performed by digital photogrammetric workstations with MicroStation and Pro600 at Kampsax India Limited in New Delhi, India.

The mapping included the following processes:

  • Photogrammetric capture of elements in the image.
  • Captures of elements (antiquities, fences and others) that are not available from the image are digitised from the scanned 1:5000 paper plots. The scanned paper plots are used as background of the images.
  • Placement of text and road numbers from other paper maps.
For this important project a number of software applications were developed in MicroStation (MDL) to ensure the quality of the data structure.
