Documentation of Carlsberg's brewery in Valby, Denmark

COWI assisted Carlsberg in documenting for the future the original site of their world famous brewery as beer production prepares to move elsewhere. The future development of the huge site was based on map documentation delivered by COWI.

Since 1847, Carlsberg has brewed beer in Valby near the Danish capital, Copenhagen. For nearly 160 years industrial history has been written on this site. However, at the end of 2008 Carlsberg will shut down beer production in Valby and move it to Fredericia, Denmark.

Highly attractive

The site in Valby is well known for its considerable architectural value and many of the old buildings are protected. Being close to Copenhagen makes it a highly attractive site for developers.

Carlsberg wished to get a well documented and complete overview of the area and its use. The map documentation delivered by COWI formed the basis for the future planning of the area.

3D visualization of the brewery site

COWI delivered a detailed 3D visualization of the site as it was in 2006, and a 3D city model of part of Copenhagen. The 3D city model was used in connection with an architectural competition about the future development of the brewery site.

Aerial surveying and laser scanning

In June 2006, COWI carried out an aerial survey and laser scan of the area. The aerial survey was conducted at a particular low altitude, using COWI's new digital camera. The low altitude resulted in a resolution of 5x5 cm in the digital orthophotos, making the photos very detailed.

COWI also provided orthophotos and oblique photos of all building facades. The digital photos provided a precise and up-to-date picture of the brewery site and its surroundings.
