Study of civil aviation in Scandinavia - economic value and importance
COWI carried out a study for SAS on SAS’s value and importance as a network carrier based in Scandinavia.
SAS is an important contributor to Scandinavian society and wishes to remain so. The company therefore decided to commission a study on the socioeconomic benefits of network carriers and other carriers.
The aim was to investigate the impact of air transport on the Scandinavian countries on the basis of data, scenarios and economic theory.
Selected conclusions
As a network carrier based in Scandinavia, SAS creates benefits/value for Scandinavian passengers through a large network, low travel time and competition
The main hub of SAS is Copenhagen Airport which is important to Scandinavia. Sabena and Brussels are an example of the far-reaching negative effects of the disappearance of the local network carrier
Air transport competition on Scandinavian routes is at the same level as in the rest of Europe.
COWI carried out the study in close co-operation with SAS.
The study was presented at the Association of European Transport conference in 2005.
