COWI uses environmental analysis as part of its environmental impact assessments for existing infrastructure projects, as well as plans and programmes. This ensures the most environmentally friendly projects in the EU.

EU regulations require environmental impact assessments to be carried out before making decisions that could have a significant effect on the environment.

Environmental impact assessment

An EIA (environmental impact assessment) is an analysis that looks into the consequences infrastructure projects will have on their natural surroundings.

EIAs are carried out in conjunction with construction of motorways, railroads, ports, airports, pipelines and high voltage transmission wires, as well as general construction, manufacturing, sewage treatment plants, transfer stations and parking facilities.

Evaluating plans and programmes
Environmental analysis of plans and programmes is carried for a number of industries and sets the guidelines for construction of future infrastructure. An environmental analysis can also be made of planned construction that could affect nature preserves.

Environmental analysis of infrastructure projects, plans and programmes is carried out together with project owners, public agencies and the general public.

First mover
COWI has provided EIA consultancy since the EU directive mandating them was implemented into Danish law the mid-1980s. In 2004, the Environmental Analysis Act was passed, and again COWI was quick to incorporate the new regulations into its consultancy.

With staff specialising in environment, transport, law, communication and public hearing, COWI can offer consultancy throughout the entire environmental analysis process, either as a comprehensive or specialised service.
