Waste prevention seminar 2011

Is reducing solid waste on construction projects up to individual contractors? Or is it a matter for government intervention? These and other issues were discussed at a seminar at COWI’s headquarters in Denmark.

On 15 June, a seminar on waste prevention was held at COWI’s headquarters in Copenhagen on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The seminar was aimed at actors in the construction and building sector who work with waste management, but policy makers at local and national levels as well as scientists in research organisations also attended the seminar, which was the first all-Nordic event of its kind.

Initiatives to prevent waste

The seminar was based on a study carried out by COWI and the Copenhagen Research Institute on behalf of the Nordic Environmental Protection Agencies and the Nordic Council of Ministers' waste group, NAG.  The study comprised an assessment of initiatives to prevent or reduce waste from the building and construction sector.

Outcome of the seminar

During the seminar, the study’s main findings were presented, and participants were encouraged to reflect on the role of voluntary initiatives versus the use of political instruments to promote changes in behaviour regarding waste prevention.

The participants left the seminar with an insights in the latest processes and practical activities within waste prevention from the industry.
