Geology and geophysics

COWI performs integrated geological and geophysical services when evaluating groundwater resources, planning construction and infrastructure projects and carrying out marine surveys for wind mill parks and other offshore constructions.

Understanding the geological processes and the relationship between geophysical properties and geological materials is the key to integrated geological and geophysical investigations. Whether it be groundwater exploration, site investigations or marine surveys, COWI has a wealth of geological and geophysical resources at its disposal.

Geophysical analyses

COWI employs all methods of geophysical analysis, from electrical and electromagnetic methods to seismics, borehole logging and airborne methods. We use three-dimensional geological modelling tools, and we integrate geological and geophysical data based on a thorough understanding of the properties of subsurface layers.

Ground water

Ground water is the major source of drinking water in the EU and a strategic resource worldwide. Knowing exactly the extent of the aquifers and their vulnerability to pollution is essential to provide adequate measures to protect them.

In close co-operation with our geophysical and geological experts, we are able to map and characterize aquifers, define the thickness of protective layers and locate threats of salt water in the subsurface.

Construction and infrastructure projects

Detailed knowledge of shallow geology is crucial for construction and infrastructure projects, because the composition of subsoil layers has an impact on geotechnical parameters and groundwater behaviour.
COWI performs geophysical site surveys based on our expertise in the fields of near surface applied geophysics, which allows us to add an extra dimension of safety to the projects and to reduce the construction costs.

Offshore projectsPrerequisites for successful offshore projects are proper and appropriate geophysical and geological site investigations. COWI has expertise in all kinds of offshore geosciences and the necessary skills to undertake planning, supervision and interpretation of any kind of marine survey assignments.
