Transport models are an important tool to analyse traffic and environmental impacts of transport projects. Simulation models are used to optimise traffic flow.
Evaluation of transport projectsRoad design has great influence on traffic accessibility, and increasing traffic creates a demand for solutions to congestion problems.


When deciding on road closures, diversion of bus traffic or new road construction, it is important to be able to evaluate impacts as precisely as possible in advance.  Transport models can make a complex traffic situation comprehensible and easier to communicate to the public and decision-makers.

Traffic impactsCOWI calculates the economic and environmental impact of traffic in all planning phases.  We use transport models to analyse the overall effects of changes to roads, traffic, modes of public transport, population, land-use and changes in transport policies.

COWI uses the simulation software VISSIM to evaluate traffic congestion and optimise traffic flow.  VISSIM can be used for private, public and bicycle transport. 

Furthermore, VISSIM can be used to analyse pedestrian flows at train stations, festivals and at airports.  We also design VISSIM analyses of sea, air and railway transport.

Model softwareCOWI uses several transport software packages for both public and private transport, e.g. VISUM,  VISEM, EMME, OTM, CONTRAM and TRIPS/CUBE for traffic models and VISSIM for simulation models.

The models include a graphical user interface which makes it possible to present input and results.  The traffic flow from simulation models can be viewed as short 3D movies.
