Laser scanning (LiDAR) from aircraft is an efficient technology for the acquisition of highly accurate elevation data of the landscape to produce Digital Elevation Models for infrastructure and development projects.

Cost-effective digital elevation models

Airborne laser scanning allows producing accurate, fast and cost-effective Digital Elevation Models (DEM) using dense point clouds with up to 30 points per sqm if needed.

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology can be applied under all light conditions, also in cloudy weather and at night.

When choosing to work with accurate LiDAR digital terrain models for design work along corridors (roads, power lines, water pipes etc.) or for development sites, months can be saved in the project time schedule because a first Digital Elevation Model can be delivered within a few months from the time of flying.

Experience in various projects
COWI has experience with laser scanning projects since 2000 with different technologies and specifications. Current projects are the nationwide laser scanning of Lithuania and Sweden and the highly accurate scanning of roads with absolute accuracies down to 1.5cm. The technology is being used for road design in Oman.

Technical equipment

COWI operates state of the art Leica systems (ALS80) which are the most effective sensors on the market.  With the proven MPiA - Multiple Pulse in Air capability  the ALS80 system now generate up to 1.000.000 pulses per second.
