Fisheries

The fisheries sector is experiencing increasing challenges due to lower quotas and more stringent demands for sustainability. We offer advice which combines fisheries economics with technical fisheries disciplines.

Regional dependency

In most countries, including Denmark, fisheries account for only a small part of the economy, but in many local communities it plays a major role. COWI carries out assessments of regional dependence on fisheries, and thus of changes in fishery policies.

Mapping

We do this by mapping fishery-dependent areas – including identifying links among fisheries, the fishing industry and other associated sectors, and describing alternative business and employment options.

Common fisheries policy
Fisheries in the EU is to a large extent governed by the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). COWI assists with the implementation of this policy. We have e.g. assisted the Lithuanian fisheries sector with the establishment of produce organisations, and helped the EU fisheries directorate set up socio-economic and environmental indicators - the latter targeted at integrating environmental impacts into policies.
