Culture and media

Freedom of expression is a basic human right, and one most easily violated. COWI works with media and culture to strengthen democratic processes, human rights, education and access to information.

Culture as a way to enhance post-conflict situations

COWI offers consultancy services in culture and media as a way to empower the poor and strengthen civil society. Promoting intercultural dialogue is a powerful means of preventing conflict, and peace and stability are fundamental prerequisites for sustainable development.

Strategic partnerships
COWI enables processes to improve the effectiveness of the relationship between cultural and media institutions and their funding partners, supporting the development of strategic partnerships based on trust, transparency and open dialogue on policy development. COWI has worked with regional media networks to promote an independent and pluralistic press in southern Africa, and conducted studies for the development of policy and guidelines for support to free media for bilateral agencies and international organisations. Further services related to culture and media development include:
  • Pre-appraisals
  • Reviews
  • Feasibility studies
  • Evaluations.
