Rural electrification planning

Electricity provision in rural areas enhances quality of life and provides a basis for economic development. COWI provides services for the management of power supply installations.

Energy efficiency and sustainable solutions

COWI uses its broad experience and network to provide sustainable solutions to the problems of energy in rural areas. We therefore work with issues of fuel efficiency, small-scale energy production, biogas generators, as well as micro-hydro, wind power, solar power and diesel generators, to provide stand-alone solutions for isolated rural communities. We offer a multidisciplinary approach in feasibility studies, monitoring and evaluation, and capacity building.

Appropriate technologies for rural areas

Working with local technicians and artisan organisations, COWI offers capacity building to strengthen management skills as well as the technical abilities in relation to new technologies. We offer technical services based on the COWI-developed Single Wire, Earth Return System (SWER), which is a low investment distribution system and can be upgraded later. We provide consulting services for rural energy networks including:
  • Electricity generation from biogas and waste
  • Planning and installation of electricity distribution systems
