Slender structures such as long span bridges, chimneys, towers and cables are vulnerable to dynamic wind actions. COWI has been actively involved in the design and prediction of wind actions and elastic responses of such structures since the Little Belt project in the mid-1960s. Our services include the prediction of dynamic wind actions and fatigue life and mitigation of undesirable wind effects.
Wind load coefficients for structural elements are an important input to wind load analyses. Wind load coefficients have traditionally been assessed by means of wind tunnel tests but today computer simulations are a quick and cost-efficient alternative. Computer simulations is also an efficient tool for assessment of smoke spread due to fire in confined spaces. Our services include determination of steady state wind load coefficients, aerodynamic flutter derivatives and vortex shedding excitation response of structural elements as well as smoke hazards from fire.
COWI possesses extensive experience in the design of and follow up on wind tunnel tests and full-scale measurements in the field. Our experience ranges from wind tunnel testing of bridge sections, cables and full aeroelastic models, full-scale mock-ups of building elements to field testing of wind screens and blast fences. COWI cooperates with a number of internationally established wind tunnel laboratories.
The wind climate at the site of a structure is an important parameter in the structural design and performance assessment. Our services comprise the design of on-site wind measuring systems, statistical analysis of wind data and drafting of wind design specifications.Assessment of wind climate and pedestian wind comfort in build op aereas is also included in the services provided.
