Movable bridges

To maintain navigation on a waterway when bridging it, COWI's solution is to construct a bascule bridge, swing bridge, lift bridge, draw bridge or a floating bridge.

Bascule bridges

A common movable bridge type is the bascule bridge, which offers unlimited vertical clearance and a wealth of opportunities for creating spectacular aesthetic landmark structures.

Swing bridges

If there is enough space, the swing bridge is a cost-effective solution, but usually requires separate structures to protect it from ship collision.

Lift bridges

When requirements for vertical clearance are moderate, a lift bridge is a rather simple and cost-effective solution.

Many disciplines

When COWI design a movable bridge we involve more disciplines than traditional bridge design. Apart from structural and geotechnical engineering, the designer must master mechanical engineering, hydraulics, electrical engineering and risk analysis.

Within our permanent staff, COWI can form integrated teams covering all these disciplines.
