Conceptual design, railways

The client's ideas are processed in the early phases of the project and grouped according to functional requirements which are analysed overall with regards to traffic, technical, time and economic benefits and consequences.

New constructions and extensions of railways and metro systems in the early phases require control of many professional disciplines to obtain the most integrated general solutions. The first ideas are included in system definitions and functional requirements which, once the lay-out has been reviewed, result in the location of possible traffic corridors, location of stations and facilities.

A conceptual design is prepared in which the project is outlined schematically and with a visualisation of the physical changes of the infrastructure. The functional requirements and capacity extensions are demonstrated by calculations and simulations, consequences are analysed and alternative possibilities are assessed.

The conceptual design is prepared in close co-operation with the client, and during the process, COWI assists in demonstrating whether the first project ideas are profitable and durable in the short and the long run.

In the field of railways and metros COWI offers all services required for a quick and effective preparation of a first conceptual design prepared according to the client's conditions.

Our services and experience include:

  • Design and project management
  • Requirement specification
  • Assessment of environment, risks and safety
  • Traffic planning and analyses
  • Capacity analyses
  • System design of railway technique (tracks, catenary, signalling and telecommunication)
  • System design of civil works (bridges, tunnels, ground and dewatering systems)
