Stage construction can be applied when warranted by investment constraints or major changes in traffic volume and is often recommended by COWI's road building specialists.
Flexible and semi-rigid pavements constitute the major part of the world's highways and runways. They are the favourite choice for moving loads of all types. We employ traditional and state-of-the-art design methods, taking into account cracking of the asphaltbound and semi-rigid layers, pavement roughness and rutting.
Comparatively low construction costs and simple repair and maintenance options are characteristic to the flexible and semi-rigid pavement types. Routine and periodic maintenance can be accomplished with simple technology.
Investment constraints or foreseeable changes in traffic volume may call for stage construction. Asphalt layers can easily be overlaid to provide increased strength, and even bonding between new and older cement and similarly stabilized layers can be achieved.
