Market analyses of public transport

In order to improve the performance of public transport, public transport authorities need to monitor passengers' travel patterns, the demographic characteristics of passengers and their views on public transport.

Methods of data collection

COWI has many years of experience in collecting and analysing data on public transport. For each assignment the right method of collecting data needs to be ascertained and then tailored to meet the actual needs. Such methods include:

  • use of demographic and socioeconomic data
  • manual or automatic passenger counts onboard buses and train
  • questionnaires, telephone interviews, other interviews
  • web-based interviews
  • focus interviews
  • stated preference.

Tools for collection of data

Data is collected by means of sending out questionnaires to specific target groups, carrying out interviews, GPS or handheld PDAs.
Furthermore, we have specialised ourselves in establishing database systems for the processing and analysis of data collected by using GIS.

Knowledge of road users' behaviour

Many years of experience in the sector of public transport have given us a broad knowledge of road users' behaviour. In fact, often we are able to evaluate the effect of new solutions without even collecting new data.
