Mechanical and electrical installations for tunnels

COWIs experience within electrical and mechanical installation systems are essential for reducing risk of accidents and limiting consequences on the road or in railway tunnels.

Road or railway tunnels need well-designed electrical and mechanical installations in order to achieve their functional goals, in particular safety and through-put. A comprehensive system of electrical and mechanical installations reduces the risk of accidents and limits the consequences, should an accident occur.

COWI provides electrical and mechanical solutions for road and railway tunnels with emphasis on investment cost, operational economy, safety and environmental impact.

Functional integration of systems

Monitoring and control of a tunnel is carried out by a number of dedicated systems, each of which carries out a specialised task, such as TV monitoring, traffic control, fire detection, air quality monitoring, control of ventilation, and groundwater pumping.

COWI has over 20 years of experience in designing solutions that generate synergies between the dedicated systems and provide optimal overall functionality for the users. Our experience covers:

  • Ventilation systems for pollution control and comfort ventilation
  • Safety systems, for fire detection, fire fighting, fire ventilation and escape routes
  • Ramp and tunnel drainage systems
  • Normal and emergency power supply
  • Normal and emergency lighting
  • Radio communication systems
  • Systems for monitoring and control (SCADA, CCTV etc.)
  • Intelligent Transport System (ITS).
