Cowi project angus l. Macdonald bridge "the big lift," wins acec-bc award of excellence

30.04.2018

COWI North America is proud to be recognized by ACEC British Columbia (ACECBC) as a recipient of the 2018 Excellence in Engineering Awards in the Transportation & Bridges category for the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge Suspended Spans Superstructure Replacement – "The Big Lift" project. COWI was presented with the award on April 7, 2018 during ACEC-BC annual Excellence in Engineering Gala.

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, completed in 1955, connects Dartmouth and downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This suspension bridge is 762 m long, with a 441 m long main span. The suspended structure reached the end of its functional life and the entire superstructure was replaced segment-by-segment during evening and full weekend closures of the bridge, with traffic using the bridge during weekdays. The new deck segments were fully prefabricated, including an initial thin layer of wearing surface, and erected in a way that allowed traffic to use the bridge immediately following the replacement of an existing deck segment, thus minimizing the effects on the traveling public.

"COWI is thrilled to be the recipient of the 2018 Excellence in Engineering Award for this project," says Darryl Matson, Senior Vice President, Bridge, COWI NA. "COWI continues to demonstrate our innovative thinking on projects such as the "Big Lift" – the annual ACECBC awards are a platform to highlight these achievements. It is hugely rewarding to see the COWI team be recognized by ACEC-BC".

Hosted in Vancouver, BC the 29th annual event celebrated the technical excellence of talented ACECBC member firms, who have been internationally recognized for their innovation, design and technology that contribute to the building of our province, and places beyond.
