Major milestone reached for Norway's second largest suspension bridge

It´s a wrap. Less than two months after arrival on a ship from China, the 30 bridge deck segments of the Hålogaland Bridge are now in place. The lifting of the bridge deck segments took the construction crew one month to lift and lock.

Already dubbed "the most beautiful bridge in the world" by local residents and engineering aficionados alike, the Hålogaland Bridge crosses the deep waters of Rombaksfjorden in the municipality of Narvik in northern Norway.

"This bridge is not only beautiful. It will also do a lot of good for the local community. With the bridge deck segments in place, we are one major step closer to achieving the goal. An amazing bridge story, which started more than 10 years ago, is coming to an end. Months of hard work remain, but I can´t wait to see the first cars crossing the bridge sometime next summer," Assad Jamal says.

Faster, safer and less congested

Once open, the bridge will increase road safety and shorten travel time between Narvik and the airport of Evenes by 20 minutes. The current road around Rombaksfjorden is frequently exposed to landslides, responsible for a long history of serious accidents over the years.

Rising 179 meters above sea level, the Hålogaland Bridge blends well in to the mountainous scenery and the neighbouring peak, the iconic Sleeping Queen. COWI, as the project engineer, provided basic and detailed design for the bridge and is currently undertaking construction follow-up. The architect for the project is Dissing+Weitling architecture.

The 1145-metre long suspension bridge is set to open summer 2018.
