The project covers the modernisation of Norway’s second-largest airport, which has given passengers less congestion, more space and a modern building. When the project started, the theoretical capacity of the old terminal had been far exceeded.Today’s Terminal 3 is a new and modern terminal designed by Nordic – Office of Architecture, with a Bergen Light Rail station as an integral part. The terminal is designed to handle 7.5 to 10 million passengers per year, and comprises a central building and piers with a total area of around 66,000 m2.
Terminal 3 will serve as an international terminal, and will also take some domestic flights. COWI and its partners in Team_T3 planned the pre-project and detailed project for the new terminal and changes to the existing terminal.
The project also includes innovative energy solutions, with a cooling system that stores cooling energy using phase change technology. Energy stored in 44,000 small plastic cells filled with a modified brine mixture allows the new cooling system to be sized for 50% capacity.
