Emporia is Malmö’s spectacular shopping centre with 25,000 visitors a day, and is one of the most revered shopping centres in Europe, winning many awards.
Real estate group Steen & Ström built the centre, which was designed by Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor.
Emporia covers some 160,000 m2 and features shops, offices, residences and covered parking. The client stipulated that the specified materials should be verified and assessed by the Sunda Hus (‘healthy building’) environmental certification system.
All materials less than class B had to be separately evaluated by the county council.
COWI’s assignment also involved meeting the requirement of the City of Malmö for stormwater to be managed locally. This was achieved by providing large parts of all roof surfaces with ‘green roofing’, which muffles noise, slows stormwater and insulates.
Emporia opened on schedule in October 2012.
