Large-scale building scanning

Large-scale building scanning for 16,038 rooms across 412 buildings covering over 39,500 m2 of public estates.

This was the result of an extensive BIM Modelling assignment carried out for the municipality of Elsinore in Denmark.

The purpose was to help the municipality correct mistakes and address modifications made, by comparing the scans against old floor plans, and provide a reliable basis for facility management.

Precise and up-to-date 2D CAD drawings were generated from 3D point clouds reflecting the infrastructure layout of all of the scanned buildings.

The project was carried out using the COWI SLAM scanning system. The system has a scanning radius of 30 metres and scans up to 43,200 points per second, making it extremely fast and accurate (uncertainty <50 mm), meaning that the project progressed four times faster and cost only a quarter of the usual market price.

COWI is currently (2018) one of the few operators of SLAM systems with a complete service chain - from data acquisition to final processing - in Scandinavia.
