The new district heating system in Shangri-La sets new standards for energy-efficient and emission-free heat production in China.
It is based on hydroelectric power and heat pumps that provide great environmental benefits for the city, which has previously been plagued by atmospheric pollution due to the use of wood and coal burning stoves for heating.
The new district heating system increases energy production by 200-300 per cent and can supply heat to around 100,000 inhabitants.
COWI played a key role in the project, which has already attracted a great level of interest from surrounding cities in China, including Beijing.
