The district heating company in Grenaa will replace a coal-fired CHP plant and a waste-to-heat plant. In addition to the conversion to non-fossil district heating, it involves a reduction in the district heat price in the supply area involved.
The plant consists of two identical boilers equipped with electrostatic precipitators to reduce dust emissions in order to fulfil the new European legislation for medium sized combustion plants (MCP Directive).
For optimisation of the total plant efficiency, each boiler is equipped with a flue gas condenser and an absorption heat pump to obtain a total energy efficiency of 117%.
COWI conducted owners engineer services for the new 35 MW thermal woodchip-fired district heating plant.
