Decontamination and demolition works for New Drammen Hospital, Norway

Strategic environmental consultancy Solutions
Between now and 2040, up to 50,000 new inhabitants and 25,000 new jobs are expected to come to the Drammen region. That is why Drammen is to get a new hospital, which will address the need for treatment capacity for a rapidly growing population.

The site where the new hospital is to be built now contains factory, workshop and warehouse buildings. COWI is therefore assisting with an environmental analysis and drawing up a decontamination specification for the buildings and the soil over an area of 60,000 m² on Brakerøya in Drammen.

The aim of the project is to identify substances harmful to health and the environment in building materials, and then to describe how decontamination and final treatment of these materials and substances should be handled to meet health and safety requirements and avoid polluting the external environment when they are disposed of.

The work also involves dealing with historic buildings and possible contamination of the soil.
