eNHANCED TRAFFIC FLOW AND IMPROVED SAFETY IN ALINGSÅS

Strategic environmental consultancy Solutions
The E20 passes through central Alingsås and divides the town in two. To enhance traffic flows and improve safety, the Swedish Transport Administration is planning to upgrade the road through the town to become a motorway. In connection with this, the municipality is looking for a way to create a cohesive and attractive town, with emphasis on the district of Lyckan, which is in the vicinity of the road.

COWI and White Arkitekter were engaged to produce an outline plan studying the options to cover over and/or lower parts of the E20 through Alingsås. The aim was to examine how upgrading the road would contribute to the sustainable long-term development of Alingsås. The work made use of a value-based urban development method that developed an early understanding of the assets and potential problems in the area concerned. As part of this, impact analyses were conducted for the natural and cultural environments, risks, noise, vibration, air quality, soil contamination, pipes and cables, traffic and social aspects.
