DESIGNING PROTECTION FOR A NEW PORT

Ports and marine structures Solutions

The greenfield Chhara Port is located 50 km west of Diu Airport in the Gir Somnath District of Gujarat, and is currently being developed in phases. When complete, the port will include a terminal with a handling capacity of 20 million tons per annum, berths, warehouses and parking lots.

In order to protect the 3.3 km long section of berths for liquefied natural gas carriers, container ships, multipurpose berths and coal jetties within the port against the sea, a 4.2 km long breakwater with Accropodes was built 3 km off the shoreline on 5-8 m water depth. COWI has carried out the detailed design of this breakwater.
